Enjoying the benefits of electric driving

With Electric Vehicles (EVs) gaining popularity and infrastructure improving in many countries, more of our team members have taken the leap to EVs. Here, they share their experiences, addressing some of the common myths surrounding EVs and highlighting the rewards and challenges. If you are considering an EV but have reservations, these stories might just inspire you to make the switch!

“I’ve always had an appetite to move to an EV based on performance, sustainability, and the cost savings, but I was on the fence.”

We asked Cloud colleagues what misconceptions they had before switching to EVs:

• Jeff: “I thought long-distance EV travel would be inconvenient, but I quickly realised it’s both easy and enjoyable.”

• David: “I assumed there wouldn’t be enough chargers on UK roads, but charging has been smooth, especially with a home charger.”

• Nichola: “I thought EV range was unreliable, but after two years, I can confidently say the distance estimates are accurate.”

• Liam: “I was worried charging would be inconvenient, but it’s actually a breeze, and the lower running costs have been a huge bonus.”

Are there Enough Chargers?
Many people worry that the EV charging network is not extensive enough. However, with superchargers and more public chargers becoming available, our employees found charging both at home and on the road straightforward. Although some busy areas, like the M25, have higher demand, most of the time, finding a charger is not a problem. One of our colleagues advises checking your area’s EV infrastructure before deciding, as this can provide reassurance about charging availability.

“Charging is an absolute breeze, it took a few weeks to get used to plugging in the car.”

The Cost Advantage: “Around 40% Lower”
Cost savings were a significant motivator for many. Rising fuel costs pushed several employees to explore the lower operating costs of EVs, and they have not looked back. Charging costs are around 40% lower than filling up with petrol or diesel, with drastically reduced maintenance expenses. With fewer parts to worry about, such as exhaust systems and oil changes, EVs bring a distinct financial benefit over time.

“I don’t even think about the cost of charging, it’s so low.”

A Break Becomes Part of the Journey
Switching to an EV has changed the driving habits of some employees, for the better. Instead of long stretches of uninterrupted driving, drivers are now encouraged to take short breaks for charging. For one responder, this has meant a 20-minute rest every few hours, making journeys more relaxed and enjoyable. Adapting to a charging routine may take time, but, as one employee noted, “You very quickly get into that routine, and the charging infrastructure is improving all the time.”

“I did a 1200km round trip on the weekend, 6 hours travel. I stopped twice each way for charging and enjoyed a coffee, a leg stretch and a sandwich. It was both simple and a pleasure” 😊

“We are a family of 5 with 3 young children so when we do long distance stopping to charge for 40-60 minutes is a blessing, we have time to stretch our legs, have something to eat and give the children a break from being in the car.”

Environmental Impact
Beyond cost, many employees feel good about making an environmentally responsible choice.
One employee mentioned the added perks of reduced emissions, which is especially valuable in urban areas like London where congestion and ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) charges can be avoided. While concerns about battery production are noted, the environmental benefits of lower emissions outweigh these for many.

“I’m pleased with the fact that I’m not draining the limited fossil fuels that we have left on this planet.”

“It genuinely feels great that I am doing my part.”

Advice for the Hesitant: “Go for It!”

The overall sentiment from our EV drivers is one of enthusiasm and encouragement. They recommend checking local infrastructure, exploring EV purchase options, and, if available, taking advantage of a salary sacrifice scheme like Octopus, which includes maintenance, servicing, and insurance. As one employee emphasised:

“Our own colleague stories highlight that with planning and a bit of adaptation, switching to an EV can be rewarding on multiple levels”.
